BOCA RATON, Fla. - In their only preseason test, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team was victorious on Friday night vs. Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2.
Turning Point:
The Owls scored all three of their goals in the first half, on their first three shots of the match. In the 18th minute, FGCU had a shot blocked, which was countered quickly into a breakaway goal on the other end by Elisha Holmes. Fifteen minutes later, freshman Sammy Vitols found Pernille Velta on a cross from the far sideline for a successful header, and eight minutes after that, Alex Mastrobuono beat the goalkeeper on a 1-on-1 from quite a distance.
The Finish:
FGCU made it a one-goal match in the second half, and after a nearly-one-hour weather delay, by scoring in the 72nd and 77th minutes. But the Owl defense tightened, and FAU goalkeeper Jennifer Ocampo had three of her five saves in a five-minute span after the Eagles' second goal to help seal the win.
Notables:
Quotable:
"I thought the first half, and probably the first 12 minutes of the second half, we were doing a lot of great things," said Head Coach Patrick Baker. "(We were) up 3-0, moving the ball, great spacing, and the weather delay kicked in. In fairness, they changed systems and personnel, it started to rain, they got direct and we didn't handle it very well. It became 3-1, 3-2, arguably could've been 3-3. (We were) pretty fortunate."
What's Next:
FAU's season opener comes in exactly one week's time, on next Friday, Aug. 18. The Owls will host Florida at FAU Stadium beginning at 7 p.m.
