BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's cross country program, under Head Coach Alex Smolka, kicks off the 2017 schedule at home ahead of five more regular season meets and the postseason.
The Owls' annual home event, the FAU Cross Country Invitational, will take place on Friday, Sept. 1 at 6:00 p.m. It will be the fourth straight year the program has hosted an event, and it will be held at South Country Regional Park (12551 Glades Road in Boca Raton).
The remainder of the regular season - five meets for the women and four for the men - will all be in the Sunshine State. Just the women's contingent will head to Jacksonville on Sept. 9 for the UNF Invitational, and two weeks later, both sides will compete at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville.
The final September meet is in Lakeland, the FLRunners.com Invitational, on the 29th, and the first two weekends in October wrap the regular season: the 7th at the Disney World Invitational in Celebration, and Friday the 13th in Tampa, at the USF Invitational.
From there, it's a two-week preparation for the 2017 Conference USA Championship, held this year on Oct. 28 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and the postseason wraps with the NCAA South Regional, Nov. 10 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
"Our 2017 schedule will give us the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the state and in our region, in order to prepare us for the C-USA Championships at the end of October," said Smolka. "The schedule doesn't have us miss a lot of class time, which will help us work toward our academic goals as well. Overall, we feel the meets that we will be competing at gives us a very good opportunity to perform well when it counts most, namely the C-USA Championships and hopefully beyond."
