CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University track and field team concluded competition at the University of Miami Alumni Invitational, with junior Frida Thorsås taking first place in her first heptathlon of the outdoor season, and for the third straight year at UM.
Notables:
- Thorsås totaled 5,425 points to win by 243 over a heptathlete from UM. On the first day, she placed second in the shot put (11.94m), tied for second in the high jump (1.65 meters) and was third in both the 100 hurdles (14:81) and 200 meter dash (26.42). Then on day two, she took third in the long jump (5.35m) before winning both the javelin (45.24m, a new school record) and 800 meters (2:13.08) to clinch the victory
- For the junior, she is now ranked second in the heptathlon in Conference USA and in the NCAA East Region, and she is No. 12 in the nation. Her javelin mark is fourth and 800m time is fifth in C-USA
- Jamika Glades finished among three in a dead heat in the 100 meter hurdles, officially placing eighth, but fifth among college runners, at 13.62. That is yet another personal record
- Glades is second in C-USA and 29th in the country in the 100m hurdles. She didn't run in the 400m hurdles at UM, but her previous best time ranks first in the conference and 20th nationally
- In the same race, Crystal McDougle was 10th/seventh (13.80), shaving nearly 3/10ths of a second off her best, and moving her into third place on the program's all-time list
- McDougle is fifth in C-USA in the 100m hurdles, and 51st in among NCAA East runners
- Sophia Clark and Johanna Freeman finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 5,000. Clark ran 19:06.16 while Freeman came in at 19:14.26.
- The Owls' 4x100 relay ran fifth in a field of 12, with Deja Jones, Sitia Martinez, Sherline Valentin and McDougle combining for a time of 45.75. They moved up to the fifth-fastest time in program history and has the No. 3 time in C-USA and No. 32 mark in the East Region
- Christina Humphries set a PR and finished in ninth place in the 1,500 meters (5:10.89)
- Jones took 10th place in the 100 meters, finishing in a time of 11.94. She was the sixth fastest collegian running, and has the No. 13 ranking in C-USA
- She was also 15th (11th among collegiate runners) in the 200, running 24.56. That mark is 12th-fastest in the conference
- Also in the 200, Valentin ran a new PR of 25.02
- In the 400 meters, Anne-Catherine Wasser crossed at 57.28 for 13th and 10th for those attached to a school
- The Owls had three among the top 12 DI runners in the 800, and all set PR's: Liz Wellman (2:16.61, eighth), Carydaliz Fontanez (2:17.22, 10th) and Erica Lersch (2:19.46, 12th). Across C-USA, the three are 17th, 19th and 23rd, respectively. Also with a new best was Angelique Francois (2:24.18)
- Two new men's top 10 marks were reached, in the 5,000 meters: Jonathan Werble (eighth, 15:45.38) and John Marting (ninth, 15:50.88)

"It's exciting to see the progress we are making throughout the season," said Head Coach Alex Smolka. "More and more of our student-athletes are ranked in C-USA as well as nationally. With five weeks remaining we are hitting our stride very nicely, and the best is yet to come."
What's Next:
After a week off from competition, the squad heads out of state for the first and only time in the 2017 outdoor regular season, to Charlottesville, Virginia. The two-day Virginia Challenge starts Friday, April 21 and finishes up the following day.
