Florida Atlantic University women's basketball (4-23, 0-16 C-USA) was overcome 97-66 by UTSA (13-14, 9-7 C-USA) in the Owls' last road game of the season on Saturday at the Convocation Center.
The Finish:
Nika Zyryanova hit one from downtown to start the fourth with UTSA up by 26. However, FAU did not see a field goal for the next five minutes until Malia Kency drove in for a layup. In that time, the Roadrunners forced four Owl turnovers and scored 10 points with Loryn Goodwin taking eight. FAU held UTSA to zero field goals for nearly three minutes until Deja Cousin hit two at 1:36. The Owls also went scoreless for just over two minutes until Jacey Bailey had the team's last two points of the contest with under a minute to play. A 3-pointer by Kourtney Kekec ended the game, which fell in favor of the Roadrunners.
The Breakdown:
The Roadrunners opened the game with a quick five-point lead in the first two minutes. Melinda Myers put the Owls on the board followed by back-to-back baskets from Katelyn O'Reilly to bring FAU within three halfway through the first. UTSA then put together a 10-0 run over the next 1:46 to extend their lead to 11. The home team would put up nine points to the visitor's five to take a 31-13 lead into the second quarter.
FAU went on a 14-6 run in the first four minutes of the second quarter on the back of Raven Doyle to come within 10 of the Roadrunners. However, Tesha Smith had three consecutive makes to keep the Owls at arm's length. FAU did not see a field goal for the final 4:23, and UTSA took advantage with an 11-1 run over the final 2:17 to go up 53-32 at the half.
The teams exchanged shots in the initial minutes of the third quarter but UTSA maintained a 23-point cushion with six minutes left to play. UTSA hit seven of their last seven to widen the score to 76-50 with just over two minutes left in the quarter while the Owls came away with 3-of-6 to try to stay in it. UTSA ended the third with 80 points to FAU's 55 despite the Owls shooting 60 percent from the floor and going 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. O'Reilly led the offensive effort as she went 3-for-3 overall and 2-for-2 from the 3-point line for eight points.
