Volleyball Nipped by Rice in Five

HOUSTON, Texas - For the second season in a row, the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team's match against Rice went five sets. This time, FAU came out on the wrong end of the decision (23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 15-4) on Friday night. FAU fell to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in Conference USA play.

Reigning C-USA Freshman of the Week Sydney Nemtuda's strong serving helped put FAU up 12-7 in the first set. Rice rallied to tie the score at 19-19 before FAU took the next three points to regain control. The Texas version of the Owls fought back to within a point before Sigourney Kame's seventh kill of the frame gave FAU a 25-23 win. Set number two was tight from the beginning, with neither side able seize firm control of the action. The seventh and final tie came at 22-22 when three consecutive FAU attack errors tied the match at a set each. FAU found itself in a 10-6 hole early in the third stanza, but was able to level the score at 13. At that point, Sigourney Kame took over the action. The sophomore had six kills down the stretch, giving FAU a 2-1 lead. Rice led 20-17 late in the fourth set. FAU was able to pull within a point twice, but never caught up and fell 25-22, forcing a fifth set. In that fifth set, Rice got out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back, taking the set and the match 15-4.
Notables
- Sigourney Kame led FAU with a career-high 28 kills. It is her sixth 20+ kill match of the season.
- Abbi Reid put down 19 kills, while Gabrielle Dixon added 11.
- Ivone Martinez had her team leading fifth double-double of the season with 67 digs and 11 kills.
- Alex Cardona tallied a career-high 29 digs.
- Kori Varney notched 15 digs.
