EMERSON, Ga. - The Florida Atlantic University beach volleyball team lost to LSU 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) tournament on Saturday.
The Owls lost to rival FIU 3-2 in their final match of the round robin portion of the tournament. A 21-18, 21-10 win by Delaney Clesen and Gabrielle Dischler at no. 1 gave the Owls a 1-0 lead. At no. 4, Ashlan Cunningham and Jazmine Barker fell in straight sets to tie the match 1-1. FAU dropped the matches on courts two and three, allowing the Panthers to take the win. Natalie Fraley and Nicole Grant rallied from a first set loss to take the match on court five, winning the third set 17-15.
FAU faced LSU in their first elimination round matchup. Four of the five matches went to three sets. Fraley and Grant lost in straight sets at court five to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Cunningham and Barker dominated the LSU duo 21-8 in the first set at no. 4 before dropping the second set. They won the third set 15-13 to tie the match 1-1. On court three, Chelsey Tekavec and Andrea Galinis stormed back from a first set loss and won the third set 15-13 to give FAU a 2-1 lead. After the Tigers tied the score with a three-set win on court no. 2, the entire match came down to the no. 1 court. Clesen and Dischler won a grueling first set 26-24, then were nipped 21-17 in the second set to force a climatic third set. LSU won the frame 15-11 to take the match.
The Owls finish the season with a 14-15 dual match record and are expected to return a wealth of experience for the 2017 season.
