EMERSON, Ga. - The Florida Atlantic University beach volleyball team split its first day at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) tournament on Friday, beating Tulane 3-2 before falling to Georgia State 3-2.
In FAU's first match of the day, Natalie Fraley and Nicole Grant won in straight sets, 21-13, 21-14, at no. 5 to put FAU up 1-0. Brittany Pellitteri and Julia Lewkowicz lost in straight sets at no. 2, tying the match 1-1. Andrea Galinis and Chelsey Tekavec outlasted the Green Wave duo 17-15 in the third set on the no. 3 court to retake a 2-1 lead for the Owls. On the no. 4 court, freshmen Ashlan Cunningham and Jazmine Barker rallied to take the third set 16-14 and clinch the match for FAU. At no. 1, Delaney Clesen and Gabrielle Dischler dropped the third set 15-12.
Against Georgia State, Fraley and Grant (no. 5) and Pellitteri and Lewkowicz (no. 2) both lost in straight sets to put the Owls down 2-0. However, Galinis and Tekavec won 21-19, 21-18 on court 3, quickly followed by Clesen and Dischler sweeping their match at no. 1, 23-21, 21-13 to tie the match. On the no. 4 court, Cunningham and Barker dropped a hard fought 21-19, 21-14 decision to clinch the match for the Panthers.
The Owls (13-14) will finish the round robin portion of the tournament at 9 a.m. on Saturday, when they face FIU before finding out if they will move on the elimination phase, which begins at 2 p.m.
