BOCA RATON. Fla.- The Florida Atlantic University beach volleyball team closed the inaugural Burrow Beach Bash by sweeping Webber International 5-0, but got nipped by UNF 3-2.
FAU (3-1) swept aside WIU in its first match of the day. The Warriors won just one set. That came on no. 5, where Nicole Grant and Natalie Fraley were edged 21-19 to force a third set. In the final frame, Grant and Fraley earned a decisive 15-5 victory. The second flight of matches were slightly more competitive. Chelsey Tekavec and Andrea Galinis were impressive in their victory at no. 3, winning 21-11 and 21-9.
On the no. 2 court, Heather Weiss and Nicole Navarro held off a pesky duo from WIU to win 22-20 and 21-15. Delaney Clesen and Gabrielle Dischler completed the sweep with a 21-7, 21-19 win at no. 1. Jazmine Barker and Kaitlyn Smith won their exhibition match in straight sets.
The Owls lost to UNF 3-2 in the final match of the tournament. FAU defeated the Ospreys 4-1 on Saturday. On the exhibition court, Barker and Amber Davis won the third set 15-6 to take the match. At no. 5, Grant and Fraley, were on the verge of forcing a decisive third set, but ultimately lost a hard fought match 21-18, 24-22. It was a similar story on court 4, where Lewkowicz and Cunningham came up just short, losing both sets 24-22. The Osprey duo of Kimbo Ferguson and Lauren Ford defeated Navarro and Weiss 21-17, 22-20 at no. 2 to clinch the match for UNF.
FAU didn't fold its tents, however, and pulled out thrilling victories on each of the first two courts. After outlasting the UNF duo 26-24 in the first set, Clesen and Dischler had to mount a furious rally to take the second set 22-20 and give the Owls their first point of the match. After witnessing that dramatic outcome, all eyes shifted to the no. 3 court. Tekavec and Galinis won the first set 21-16, but came up just short in set number two, losing 24-22. In the final set, the tandem was able to hold off the pair from UNF and take a 15-12 win.
The Owls travel to Columbia, S.C. for next weekend's Carolina Classic, hosted by the University of South Carolina.
