MIAMI, Fla. â€" A double-double by junior Kat Wright and 16 points by senior Ali Gorrell led the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team to a 63-52 road win at FIU on Saturday in a Conference USA battle.
The Owls (13-14, 5-11 C-USA) made ten three-pointers and edged the Panthers (4-23, 2-14 C-USA) in each quarter to snap an eight-game road losing streak. Wright posted a 15-point, career-high 10-rebound performance while Gorrell dished out four assists with four rebounds.
"We haven't done well on the road all year," FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. "We've been close, so it's nice to come in here and get a win. We knew they were going to play hard on their senior day."
The first quarter featured four lead changes as Wright scored eight of FAU's first ten points to hold a 12-11 lead at the break.
Six more lead changes and two ties highlighted the second quarter before Malia Kency and Gorrell hit back-to-back threes to give FAU a 27-23 advantage going into the locker room.
The two teams traded baskets several times in the third quarter, but each time FIU was able to make it a one-possession game, the Owls would respond. The Panthers cut the lead to two with 3:16 left in the period before five different Owls scored to end the quarter with FAU on top 41-33.
An early 8-0 run gave FAU a 15 point lead on a three-pointer by Sasha Cedeno with just under eight minutes to play. Another three by Wright put the Owls on top by a game-high 17 with 4:39 on the clock before FIU threatened a comeback. An 8-0 Panther run with the help of three FAU turnovers narrowed the advantage to nine points with 3:04 to play. FIU was unable to find the bottom of the net the rest of the way, however, as FAU held on for its 13th win of the year.
The Owls wrap up the regular season with a road trip to Middle Tennessee and UAB before opening the Conference USA Tournament in Birmingham on March 8.
