BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" A 20-11 third quarter in favor of Rice propelled the visiting Owls to a 75-54 victory over the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team Thursday night in Conference USA play.
FAU (11-14, 3-11 C-USA) saw three players score double-digits as Ali Gorrell, Sasha Cedeno and Nika Zyryanova each recorded ten. Junior Kat Wright led FAU on the boards with six rebounds.
"Offensively, we're struggling," FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. "But defensively you can't give up those percentages. You're not going to win any games playing that kind of defense."
Rice (6-18, 5-8 C-USA) started the contest on an 8-3 run before FAU responded to tie the game at 10 apiece at the 5:34 mark of the first quarter. A three-pointer by Morgan Robinson put FAU on top 19-18 at the close of the frame.
Rice scored the first five points of the second quarter and built up an eight point lead with 4:05 on the clock. FAU chipped the lead down to five before Rice rebuilt the advantage to 38-30 at the half.
Rice pieced together a 15-3 run in the third quarter, including a 10-0 run to end the period to take a lead of 21 at 63-43 on a three-pointer with 14 seconds on the clock. FAU was unable to get closer than 19 points in the fourth as Rice went up by as many as 24. Zyryanova made the final basket of the game at the 3:18 mark before making a free throw to end the scoring at 75-54.
