An Owl's eye view of FAU:
Despite the team's recent offensive snags, the Owls are shooting 39.6 percent from the field and see 6.2 threes hit their mark each game. Ten of the team's 11 players are shooting above .325 with three above .400 and two above the .500 mark. FAU continues to work hard on defense, outrebounding opponents 42.0-39.0 per contest.
Last time out for the Owls: FAU (3-6) was handed its fourth consecutive loss, 65-50, by Florida Gulf Coast University (5-5) on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles had a 53-39 lead as they brought their offensive momentum from the third quarter into the fourth. FAU was held scoreless until 5:29 when Ra'Kyra Gabriel saw a layup for two. FAU would only see nine more points in the quarter as FGCU would earn 12 total to ensure the win.
Whooo to watch: Katelyn O'Reilly had a team-leading 12 points, which ties her career high, as she went 4-for-5 from the floor against FGCU. She has a team-high field goal percentage of 54.4 percent and averages 9.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Fellow freshman Vashnie Perry had 10 points of her own as she shot 2-for-4 from the 3-point line and set a career high with four rebounds. Junior Sasha Cedeno continues to lead the team offensively with 11.1 points per game and 4.7 rebounds.
Gabriel had an impressive outing on defense in the FGCU contest as she broke her career best in rebounds with 10. Alexis Shannon and Raven Doyle contributed as well with seven boards apiece. That is a career high for Shannon who also tied her personal best in assists with three. Doyle is first on the team in rebounds per game with 8.0 and earns an average of 9.8 points each outing.
An Owl's eye view of Jackson State:
While the Lady Tigers boast a perfect 4-0 record at home, the team has struggled on the road going 0-3. JSU averages 70.9 points per game compared to opponents 70.6. The margin is also close in field goal percentage (.374-.377) and rebounds per game (45.3-43.4). The team does earn more takeaways and blocks than their challengers with 13.0 and 4.9, respectively.
Most recent outing for the Lady Tigers: Junior guard Derica Wiggins scored a game-high 20 points to lead Jackson State (4-3) to an 83-66 win over Southeastern Louisiana (2-6) on Tuesday night. For the game, JSU shot 41 percent from the field (25-61), 31.3 percent in threes (5-16) and 70 percent from the line (28-40). The Lady Tigers held the edge in rebounding (54-34), second chance points (18-6) and bench scoring (47-34).
Whooo to Watch: In addition to Wiggins' 20 points, seniors Daisha Williams came off the bench to score 14 points and Kierra Adams added 13 against the Lady Lions. Sumer Williams, Maria Conyers-Jordan and Chelsea Causey each pulled down eight rebounds for JSU. Wiggins leads the Lady Tigers in points per game with 12.3 while making 38.6 percent of her shots. She is followed by Adams with 8.6 points per game and a field goal percentage of .396 from the field and .500 from the 3-point line. On the boards, JSU is led by Causey who sees 6.4 each game while also picking up 7.9 points.
An Owl's eye view of Maryland Eastern Shore:
The Hawks are coming off a win against Mount St. Mary's, moving their record on the road to 2-3. The team is shooting 38.2 percent from the field and 32.4 percent from beyond the arc with 6.7 3-pointers each game. Eastern Shore averages 39.0 rebounds per contest to opponents' 41.0 and comes away with 6.7 steals. The Hawks' primary starters are all shooting above .350.
Most recent outing for the Hawks: Despite only scoring 21 points in the first half, University of Maryland Eastern Shore overcame their slow start and knocked off in-state foe Mount St. Mary's, 63-52. With the victory, Eastern Shore (4-3) picked up their first-ever road victory at The Mount. After 20 minutes, the Hawks shot only 33-percent (9-of-27) from the floor; however, in the second half, Eastern Shore eclipsed 52-percent (14-of-27), including 64-percent (7-of-11) from long range.
Whooo to Watch: Senior guard Mariah McCoy had a team-high 15 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor. Sophomore Ciani Byrom displayed an all-around performance, producing 13 points, five assists, four boards, and three thefts in the victory. McCoy and Byrom lead the Hawks on offense with 14.6 and 10.3 points per game, respectively. McCoy brings down 46.0 percent of her shots, including 42.9 percent from downtown, while Byrom has a team-leading 39 assists and eight steals this season.
Another notable Hawk performance against the Mountaineers included guard Moengaroa Subritzky recording 11 points and five rebounds. Subritzky is tops on defense for Eastern Shore with 7.3 boards/game, while adding 9.3 points each time out. Starting center Tori Morris also contributes on both sides of the ball as she sees half her attempts hit the mark for 7.3 points per game and is second on the team in rebounds with 6.0.
An Owl's eye view of Saint Francis:
The Red Flash had a record-setting night on Wednesday with 19 threes and nine by a single player in the team's loss to South Florida. Saint Francis is being outscored and outshot by opponents 87.1-82.0 and 44.1-41.8 percent, respectively, but making 33.7 percent of their threes and hitting 11.8 per game. SFU averages 36.9 rebounds per game compared to opponents 47.1 and sees 20.1 turnovers.
Most recent outing for the Red Flash: Saint Francis (3-5) broke a pair of school records, but a hot shooting South Florida Bulls (8-0) team proved too much in a 129-80 setback on Wednesday night. Saint Francis broke the school record with 19 made threes. Also falling was the record for threes in a game by an individual as Jessica Kovatch connected on nine triples.
Whooo to Watch: Against the Bulls, Kovatch set a career high with 37 points and her nine threes bested the record of eight, set four times most recently by Kovatch herself last season. Redshirt senior guard Katie Reese added 19 of her own as she averages 14.5 points each game. Kovatch leads the Red Flash in points per game with 20.8 followed by veteran forward Ace Harrison with 15.8. Three of the team's five starters are shooting above .400 with Harrison topping the list at .553.
Defensively, SFU recorded six blocks in the USF contest to keep up with their season average, led by a pair from Courtney Zezza, who has a team-leading 19 to date. The Flash also forced 13 turnovers, led by six steals including three by Maya Wynn. Harrison also adds a team-leading 10.4 rebounds each contest and has 28 steals on the season.
