Boca Raton, Fla. - Volleyball's Genesis Viera and swimming's John Nolte called on their veteran expertise last week to capture conference wins for their respective squads and in turn be named FAU Players of the Week.
Senior setter Viera led the Owls to a 2-0 week in conference play, contributing 92 assists during the week for a 13.14 assists per set average. She had 42 assists in FAU's sweep of Louisiana Tech on Friday and finished the week with 50 assists in a four-set win over Southern Miss to make it seven straight wins for the Owls. It was the third time she has had 50 assists in the Owls' last four matches. Viera is averaging 11.96 assists per set since taking over as the team's full-time setter.
Senior team captain Nolte helped lead men's swimming to their first victory of the season over conference rival Gardner-Webb (137-125) on Saturday. In the first race of the day, Nolte was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that took first place (1:34.97). He also saw a solo victory in the 100-yard freestyle coming in at 47.49 and finished just seven 100 hundredths of a second behind the victor in the 50-yard freestyle (21.56) to take second place. Nolte ended the meet as part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won their race (3:08.65) and secured the victory for the Owls.
Volleyball will complete their three match homestand against rival FIU on Friday, Oct. 28 beginning at 7 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at fausports.com. Swimming and diving will face Indian River State College on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. in Fort Pierce, Fla. and then come home to host Princeton on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m.
