BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University women's tennis coach Marcy Hora-Cava has announced the commitment of JaCara Gillis to the 2017 spring roster.
"JaCara is the type of player that commands the court when she walks on it without even trying," Hora-Cava said. "She brings grades, high work ethic and a tremendous amount of talent. JaCara could and can easily be on the pro tour and I'm excited to have her join us this spring."
Gillis, a native of Rock Island, Ill., was homeschooled for much of her life before attending West Boca High School as a senior, where she won the Florida State Championship.
Gillis has been ranked as high as No. 8 in the women's open division in the state of Florida and has been consistently ranked in the top ten in her USTA junior divisions.
Listed as a five-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, Gillis boasts a perfect 11-0 record against three- and four-star players and owns two wins over fellow five-star rated talents.
After her mother taught her the sport from a book at the age of five, Gillis has honed her skills by training at the Eleazar Tennis Academy in Boca Raton.
"The amount of talent that we already have on the team is impressive and JaCara makes this upcoming season even more exciting," Hora-Cava added. "The FAU women's tennis team is where the talent wants to be and it is becoming known that we as coaches want these players to have the best of both worlds academically and athletically. Brand new tennis courts on campus, the support of our local community and athletics, one mile from the beach and perfect weather for tennis is a recipe for success!"
