BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" Despite 12 three-pointers, the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team saw its five-game win streak snapped with an 81-62 loss at the hands of Conference USA foe WKU.
The Owls (10-4, 2-1 C-USA) made 12 of its 20 baskets from beyond the arc, but an early inside presence by the Hilltoppers (12-2, 3-0 C-USA) gave WKU a lead which FAU could not overcome.
"I thought our start was terrible," FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. "We weren't ready to play in the first half and we didn't do anything that we wanted to do as a team. We get one shot at WKU this year and it was very disappointing."
Kat Wright paced the Owls with 17 points while Ali Gorrell scored 12 points and dished out six assists. Morgan Robinson also reached double-digit scoring with ten points and five rebounds.
After a three-pointer by Wright tied the contest for the fourth time at the 4:16 mark of the first quarter, the Toppers held FAU to just one more field goal in the opening frame to take a 23-17 lead.
WKU started the second quarter on a 7-0 run before extending the advantage to 44-20 on a 21-3 run. A three-pointer with 53 seconds left in the quarter gave WKU a game-high lead of 25 at 50-25.
FAU opened the third quarter on a 19-4 run to whittle the lead down to nine with 1:30 left in the frame, but WKU stormed back with an 8-2 run to close the period.
The Owls were unable to get within 14 points in the fourth as they suffered their first C-USA loss of the season.
FAU goes on the road to take on Southern Miss on Fox Sports on Thursday, Jan. 14. The Owls return home to host UTEP on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
