NORFOLK, Va. -- A 29-0 run in the first half put the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team in a hole it couldn't dig its way out of as the Owls fell 85-45 at Old Dominion on Thursday.
"We stepped on the court not ready to play this game," FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. "The players have to do something different and we as coaches need to do something different to get them ready because that's unacceptable."
The Owls (11-8, 3-5 C-USA) were held to just ten points in the first quarter while the Monarchs (7-12, 4-4 C-USA) posted 24 points including four three-pointers.
FAU saw its worst offensive frame of the season in the second, scoring just five points, all from sophomore Danneal Ford. A Ford layup with 30 seconds left in the half snapped a 12:10 streak without a basket for FAU, who shot 1-of-13 in the quarter, and ended the 29-0 run. ODU shot 75 percent from the field and had 24 points off of turnovers in the first half to go up 51-15 at the break.
Three consecutive three-pointers for FAU in the third cut the advantage to 58-28, but that was as close as the Owls would get in the period. Junior Kat Wright scored eight points in the quarter, finishing with 11 on the night.
Ford scored her ninth point to open the fourth, edging the lead to second-half low 28 points before the Owls again went cold from the field as FAU went nearly six more minutes before Ali Gorrell scored with 2:56 to play.
Gorrell fouled out of the contest with 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists, snapping a streak of three consecutive games with a double-double.
FAU will face Charlotte on the road Saturday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. Live audio is available on FAUSports.com.
