RUSTON, La. â€" A game-tying three-point attempt rimmed out at the buzzer as the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team dropped its third straight Conference USA game at Louisiana Tech on Saturday 65-62.
Seniors Ali Gorrell and Morgan Robinson paced the Owls with 22 and 18 points, respectively. Gorrell also earned 11 rebounds to record FAU's first double-double of the season.
"I thought we played well defensively," FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. "We've got to just continue to get better rebounding. I'm pleased with our effort. Melinda [Myers] had a good game and Ali was her usual self."
The Owls (10-6, 2-3 C-USA) jumped out to a 7-0 lead with the help of five straight points by senior Morgan Robinson in just 1:24. The Lady Techsters (8-8, 3-2 C-USA) cut the lead to one before Robinson hit another three to keep the Owls on top at the end of the first, 12-9.
Early in the second, LA Tech again made it a one-point game before Robinson again connected on a three-pointer and propelled FAU to a game-high lead of eight at the 6:28 mark. A three by Ali Gorrell at the 4:44 mark put the Owls up 26-19, but FAU was held without a basket for the remainder of the half as LA Tech went on a 10-2 run to take its first lead of the game at 29-28.
The Lady Techsters scored the first four points of the second half before Gorrell snapped FAU's woes from the field with a layup with 7:44 left in the third. Melinda Myers scored FAU's next four points to tie the contest at 36 apiece midway through the quarter before another 8-0 run by LA Tech.
Malia Kency and Gorrell scored seven straight for FAU in the fourth to whittle the lead to one at 51-50 with 7:38 to play before yet another Lady Techster run increased the lead to 59-52 just three minutes later.
A Kat Wright three-pointer, FAU's tenth of the game, slashed the lead to one point with 1:14 to play before LA Tech's Brandi Wingate scored in the paint with 53 seconds on the clock to put the Lady Techsters up 65-62. After a missed three by the Lady Techsters, FAU inbounded the ball with eight seconds left to setup a three by Kency that went in and out of the rim as the clock hit zeros.
The Owls return home to host (RV) UTEP on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
