The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's cross country teams hosted the second annual FAU Cross Country Invitational on Friday. The men and women won their respective team events. The men's team made history, with three runners cracking the all-time top-10 in the 5K.
Michael Vidal won the men's race and broke the school record in a time of 15:25.3. Freshman Conor Fitzgerald was the next finisher for the Owls, coming in 10th with a time of 16:24.4. Fitzgerald's time marks puts him in sixth place FAU All-Time Top-10. Jonathan Werble crossed the finish line in 16:50.7, good for the 10th best time in school history. John Marting and Ross Rabalais both set personal records in the event.
"It was a great start to the season," said FAU Head Cross Country Coach Alex Smolka. "I think a lot of it had to do with the great support we got from all of the fans who came out to see us." On the women's side, the Owls focused on a team-oriented approach. Senior Chloe Sell was the Owls' top finisher in a time of 19:00.9. Johanna Freeman set a personal record to round out the scoring for FAU.
"We really wanted the women to run as a group, because that's how you win big meets. The fact that there was a little over a minute between our number one finisher and our number five finisher is proof that we accomplished that," said Smolka.
The Owls will compete again on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the UCF Cross Country Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
