HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team overcame a first set loss to beat Southern Miss in four sets (23-25, 25-17, 28-26, 25-19) on Friday night.
FAU (9-5, 1-1 C-USA) was led offensively by Maja Ristic who had 16 kills. Kristina Rankovic had nine kills and hit .296, just missing a double-double with 11 digs. Brittney Brown and Abbi Reid each chipped in with eight kills and each hit .211. Brown led the club with five total blocks.
Junior setter Genesis Viera recorded a double-double, finishing with 27 assists and 12 digs. Raveen Golston led the Owls with 17 digs, while Ristic added 13. The turning point came in the third set, when trailing 24-21, FAU staved off three straight set points to tie the set, eventually winning the set 28-26. Six of Ristic's kills came in that frame.
The Owls continue Conference USA play on Sunday, Sept. 27 when they play at Rice. The match is set for a 2 p.m. ET start and links to live stats and live video will be available at fausports.com.
