BOCA RATON, Fla. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has recognized Florida Atlantic University's Track and Cross Country teams with the Team All-Academic award for posting a cumulative 3.0 G.P.A. or higher for the 2015 outdoor season. The USTFCCCA also honored Sitia Martinez and Sherline Valentin as members of the Division I All-Academic Track & Field team for the 2015 outdoor season.
"It is an honor, once again, to be recognized for our academic excellence as a team," said Alex Smolka, FAU's head cross country and track and field coach. "I am so proud of our team for their achievements on and off the track. I hope we can continue this success for years to come."
Martinez, a junior, became FAU's second-ever Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Champion when she won the 400m hurdles (59.78) and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Preliminary Championship where she finished 25th in the East region in the 400m hurdles. She also set a career-best of 59.21 which is the second-best time in school history.
Valentin, a sophomore is a member of the 4x100m relay team that broke the school record twice, placed second at the C-USA Outdoor Championships, and qualified for the NCAA prelims. To qualify for the All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have complied a 3.25 or higher G.P.A. and have participated in the NCAA Division I Championships. Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, a total of 838 women from 207 institutions earned the USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments.
