Volleyball Splits at Courtyard Mayo Classic

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â€" The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team split its two matches at the Courtyard Mayo Classic on Saturday.
FAU easily overpowered Campbell in the first set of their match, winning 25-12. Maja Ristic had six kills in the frame. The second set was much more competitive. The score was tied at 12 before the Owls took four straight points to make the score 16-12. The lead grew to as many as six before the Camels rallied to tie the score at 23, an exchange of points led to a 24-24 tie. A Ristic kill and CU attack error gave the Owls a two sets to none lead.
The third set was also close in the early going, tied at seven when Ivone Martinez served the Owls out to a 13-7 edge. The lead never fell below four points the rest of the way as the Owls completed the sweep.
In its second match, FAU fell to host UNF in five sets (25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 12-25, 16-14). The Ospreys won the first two sets over the Owls, before FAU won the next two sets to force a decisive fifth frame. In the fifth and final set, the two teams battled back and forth for most of the frame. The score was tied at 14, before UNF won consecutive points to end the Owls' comeback attempt. Ristic led FAU with 19 kills. Ristic and Brittney Brown were named to the All-Tournament team. FAU will conclude its tournament schedule at next weekend's FGCU Invitational.
