IRVING, Texas â€" In her first weekend of action as a member of the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team, junior Erica Burt has been named the Conference USA Defender of the Week.
"I am very honored to start my first season as an Owl with a conference award, but our 2-0 weekend was a team effort," Burt said. "I'm really proud of the quality of our play and I hope we can use this momentum going into next weekend."
Burt led an FAU defense that stymied numerous offensive attacks on the weekend as FAU toppled Stetson 4-1 on Friday and North Florida 1-0 on Sunday. At UNF, she and the Owls allowed only four shots â€" including just one in the second half â€" in a one-point match. Only five of the opponents' 16 shots on the weekend were able to be on goal thanks to the disruption from Burt and the back line. The Ponte Vedra Beach native also took four shots at UNF and recorded her first assist for the Owls on the game-winner.
"We are excited to have Erica recognized by Conference USA for her performances on the weekend," FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker said. "She did a very good job over the course of the 180 minutes we played on the road. Her service on Sunday that led to the game-winning goal, showed her range and she was dominant in her aerial duels. Our back four has had the most changes from a year ago and is still developing their chemistry / continuity. Erica has been a valuable addition there and she will continue to grow in her center back role. The team was pleased with two wins, but know our soccer and execution can progress moving forward."
The Owls go back on the road for their next two games, taking on Sam Houston State and Texas A&M in College Station, Texas on Friday, Aug. 28 and Sunday, Aug. 30, respectively. FAU opens its home slate on Friday, Sept. 4 in a battle against the University of Miami at 7 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
