BOCA RATON, Fla. -
Members of the Florida Atlantic University swimming and diving team hosted a youth swim clinic at the Peter Blum Family YMCA of Boca Raton on Thursday, May 21.
This was the fourth event that the team put on this season at the YMCA. Youth from ages 4-15 participated in six different stations set up by the team, which included butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, turns and starts.
The event was led and organized by Owl swimmer Katie Dodge. The junior has served as an assistant coach for the YMCA Barracudas Swim Team for more than two years. Fellow teammate Johannes Johnston also serves as an assistant coach and helps to organize and execute these clinics.
"We do this so that the kids can have role models to look up to and to see how much someone can accomplish in their career from childhood through college," said Dodge. "It is great to hear them say that they want to be just like us and swim at FAU."
Barracudas Head Swim Coach Mike Mulroy believes these type of events are very beneficial to the kids and helps them to learn valuable stroke techniques among other skills.
"These kids think these (FAU) swimmers are rock stars," said Mulroy. "It means the world to them that they are here."
"It's very exciting and inspires me to keep swimming and become a better swimmer," said 12-year-old Barracuda member Paige. "We can learn from them because they are older, and Coach Katie makes it easier to understand what you're doing wrong and how to fix it."
