BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team lost to Conference USA foe UAB 59-56 in an afternoon battle in Birmingham on Thursday.
The Owls (13-15, 7-10 C-USA) were led by Morgan Robinson with 18 points, including four of FAU's nine three-pointers in the game. Freshman Melinda Myers paced FAU on the boards with eight rebounds in just 19 minutes on the court.
Robinson and Malia Kency each hit three-pointers to open the game for FAU, but the Owls would make just two of their next 18 attempts from beyond the arc as UAB (16-12, 10-7 C-USA) posted 24 points in the paint.
Sasha Cedeno hit a jumper followed by a free throw by Aaliyah Dotson to give FAU a three-point lead midway through the first half, but the Blazers went on a 6-0 run to recapture the advantage. The Owls retook the lead on a Shaneese Bailey layup before UAB's Janae Smith scored in the paint to give the Blazers a one-point margin at the half, 28-27.
UAB never trailed in the second half, despite FAU being able to tie the game twice in the closing minutes. Robinson hit back-to-back three-pointers with less than five minutes to play to knot the game at 49 apiece, but the Blazers shot six-of-six from the free throw line in the final 3:20 to hold on for the win.
The Owls travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to take on Middle Tennessee on Saturday, March 7. Tipoff is slated for 10:30 a.m. CT/11:30 a.m. ET for the final regular-season game of 2014-15. FAU will then play on the first day of the Conference USA Championship Tournament on Wednesday, March 11 in Birmingham.
