BOCA RATON, Fla. - Marquan Botley and C.J. Turman hooked up for the game winning play in the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team's 62-59 win over UAB on Thursday night. Botley penetrated the Blazer defense and was able to find Turman on a lob. Turman was fouled and made the free throw to convert the three-point play. Jackson Trapp clinched the win with a steal just before the final buzzer.
"We did a good job of staying positive (through the losing streak) and I think we were rewarded for that tonight," said Botley.
The game began with the Owls (9-19, 2-15 C-USA) falling behind 8-0. UAB stretched the lead to as many as 11 in the first half. A 13-0 run gave the Owls the lead and they had a 32-27 advantage at the half. FAU led by seven in the second half, but the Blazers (16-14, 12-5) rallied to take a three-point lead, 59-56, with less than three minutes to go.
Javier Lacunza tied the game at 59 with a three-pointer with less than a minute to go. An FAU defensive stand set the scene for the last second heroics. Turman led the Owls with 13 points and nine rebounds. The win snapped what had been an 11-game losing streak for FAU.
The Owls will finish the season on Saturday versus Middle Tennessee. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and seniors Anthony Graves, Brian Hornstein, Justin Raffington and Kelvin Penn will be honored before the game. Live video of the game will be available at fausports.com.
