BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team got its first taste of outside competition on Saturday, defeating Barry University 79-64 in an exhibition battle.
Junior Kat Wright led FAU with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Seniors Ali Gorrell and Morgan Robinson each reached double-digit scoring with 13 points apiece. Gorrell also earned a double-double with 12 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end, to lead all players. Sophomore Melinda Myers posted nine points and seven rebounds.
Robinson, Wright and Gorrell each scored in the opening minutes to put the Owls out to a 7-0 lead just over two minutes in. Barry would come back on an 8-0 run later in the quarter to go up by as many as four before the teams traded baskets in the final minutes to enter the break tied at 17.
The Owls pulled ahead again to start the second quarter as Gorrell and freshman Ra'Kyra Gabriel posted layups before another three by Wright increased the lead to 24-17. FAU ended the second quarter on a 10-3 run to take a 41-31 lead into the intermission.
Gorrell, Robinson and Gabriel combined to go on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter, building a game-high lead of 53-31.
Barry pieced together a 13-0 run to whittle the FAU advantage to nine with 6:43 to play. A 9-0 run by the Owls late in the fourth quarter sealed the victory for FAU's 2015-16 squad.
