CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team lost to Charlotte 86-61 on Thursday night. Two extended scoring runs by the 49ers were the key to the win.
Both teams got out to a fast start and traded buckets for the first 10 minutes. FAU (8-9, 1-5 C-USA) held a 19-18 lead at the 10:21 mark of the first half. At that point, Charlotte (9-11, 3-5) closed the half on a 23-6 run to take a 41-25 advantage into the locker room.
The Owls opened the second half with a modest run to trim the deficit to 11, but the 49ers answered with a decisive 26-7 run to seal the win. FAU was outrebounded 47-24 on the night.
"(Charlotte) is a very talented team with a lot of young guys and they put it all together tonight," said FAU head coach Michael Curry after the game.
Marquan Botley scored 23 points to tie his season high, while Justin Massey and D'Andre Johnson each added 10. Johnson and Justin Raffington both saw game action for the first time in over a month after recovering from injuries.
FAU travels to Old Dominion to face the Monarchs on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Ken Lavicka will have the call for the game on fausports.com. All FAU games will be carried on ESPN West Palm 106.3, which has an APP for the Smart Phone platform.
