BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - A 21-0 run to open the game gave Western Kentucky a cushion that the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team failed to overcome as the Owls lost 80-43 on the road.
The Owls (8-7, 2-2 C-USA) saw their Conference USA record slip to 2-2 and FAU will remain on the road to face conference foe Marshall on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Huntington, W. Va.
Sophomore Shaneese Bailey led the Owls with 14 points, with six of those coming from the free throw line. The Callahan, Fla. native was one rebound away from a double-double.
WKU (15-2, 4-0 C-USA) scored 21 unanswered points over the first 5:20 of the contest before Bailey made a pair of free throws to snap the streak.
It took 6:28 for the Owls to find the bottom of the net before Ali Gorrell hit a three-pointer to pull back within 18 points. A 12-5 run over the last five minutes of the half gave WKU a 48-20 lead at intermission. FAU committed 15 first-half turnovers, which the Hilltoppers converted into 20 points.
A 12-2 run early in the second half extended the WKU lead to 64-28 at the second media timeout. The Hilltoppers then pieced together an 11-0 run to reach the largest margin of the game, a 41-point lead at 77-36.
FAU made just three baskets in the last 8:33 as freshmen Raven Doyle, Melinda Myers and Danneal Ford each made layups down the stretch.
Ford finished the day with a career-high six points while fellow freshman Sasha Cedeno also posted six.
Live audio of FAU's game at Marshall will be provided on FAUSports.com with a pregame show starting at 12:50 p.m.
