BOCA RATON, Fla. - Jackson Trapp scored a season high 20 points, and the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team used a workmanlike effort to defeat Ave Maria 54-43 on Sunday. FAU improved to 2-3 on the year, while Ave Maria fell to 5-3.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, after a Gyrene layup cut FAU's lead to 5-4, the score didn't change for nearly five minutes of game action. Another Gyrene bucket briefly gave them a 6-5 lead, but the Owls responded with 15-4 run to take a 20-10 lead. Ave Maria hit a three pointer right before the halftime buzzer to make the score 20-13 at the break.
After a stout defensive performance in the first half, FAU's offense found its rhythm in the first half. The Owls scored the first 16 points of the second half to take a 36-13 lead, but Ave Maria eventually cut the deficit back to within single digits with just over four minutes to play. However, Marquan Botley scored all seven of his points down the stretch to seal the victory for FAU.
Trapp's 20 points led all scorers, while Kelvin Penn added eight points, five blocks and four rebounds.
The Owls host East Carolina on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. Live video of the game will be available on fausports.com.
