FAU-Elon Box Score ELON, N.C.- An extended offensive drought in the second half proved fatal as the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team lost its regular season opener 64-58 to Elon on Friday night.
The Owls (0-1) built a 10-point lead in the first half behind 50 percent shooting (4-of-8) from three-point range. That helped overcome foul trouble by both Justin Massey and Kelvin Penn. A late surge by the Phoenix (1-0) cut the margin to five at the half.
Marquan Botley made a layup just over a minute into the second half to put FAU back up by five, but that would be the last Owls' field goal for nearly 10 minutes. Jackson Trapp hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 49 with 8:52 remaining, but Elon immediately responded with a three of its own to regain the lead.
FAU had the ball and was still down three with two minutes to go, but a turnover returned the ball to Elon. The Owls were able to come up with an initial defensive stop, but an Elon offensive rebound and putback sealed the game.
Botley and Trapp both finished with a game high 15 points, while Justin Raffington narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Owls return to Boca Raton to host Warner on Monday in their regular season home opener. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
