BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team will open its regular- season this weekend with home matches against the University at Albany and the University of Arizona on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
New FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker leads a squad of 32 players, 12 of whom saw action last season. That dozen provided 65 percent of the team's scoring in 2012, led by then-freshman Claire Emslie's 10 goals. The Scotland native was named FAU's Player to Watch in Conference USA this season.
A trio of seniors, Brittney Nash, Marisa Russo and Courtney Zwetsch also are expected to make an impact early in the year for FAU. Nash led the Owls last season with five assists while Russo tallied 23 shots to rank second on the team.Zwetsch looks to get back to her early-career form when she saved more than 80 percent of shots taken and recorded four shutouts. The Tampa, Fla. native held FGCU scoreless during her time in goal in last week's exhibition contest.
Defensive specialist Yazmin Ongtengco, a junior from Ontario, Canada, returns after leading the team in minutes played in her sophomore campaign.
Both of FAU's opponents this weekend, as well as the Owls themselves, will be led by entirely new coaching staffs. Friday's kickoff against Albany is set for 7 p.m. while the Arizona match is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday. Each contest will be held at the FAU Soccer Stadium.
Tickets are available for $5 and may be purchased at the gate. FAU students are admitted free with a valid OWL card. More information on tickets can be found at http://www.fausports.com/tickets/w-soccer-1213-tickets.html
