BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University has named Eszter Bucz, a multiple record-breaking swimmer, and senior infielder Mike Albaladejo, the third-leading hitter in the Sun Belt Conference, as this week's FAU "Student-Athletes of the Week."
At the SBC Swimming and Diving Championships, Bucz was part of five school record-setting performances among the 14 that the team accumulated over the four-day event. Bucz not only set the school record, but also the new SBC mark in the 400-yard individual medley, with a time of 4:12.64. She picked up a second conference title in the 1,650-yard freestyle, at a time of 1:58.39.
The junior, from Budapest, Hungary, also broke the school's individual FAU record in the 200-yard IM (1:59.41), and as part of each of the 200-yard medley, 800-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay squads.
Senior infielder Albaladejo set the table offensively from the leadoff spot in the batting order for FAU to take three of four games from Manhattan, a team that participated in last year's NCAA regionals. The Winter Garden native recorded a hit in six of his 13 at-bats for a .462 batting average. He drove in a pair of runs in two of the four games and scored four runs as well. Albaladejo went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored in the finale on February 26. He did not commit an error defensively in the series, adjusting to second base while also starting two games behind the plate. On the season he is hitting .536 (15-of-28), third in the conference, with seven RBIs and seven runs scored, and is reaching base at a .571 clip, ranking him second in the SBC.
The baseball team will have a one-game road trip to take on the University of Miami on Wednesday, February 29, with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm. Later this week, they will host Princeton University in a four-game set at the FAU Baseball Stadium beginning Friday, March 2.
Both men's and women's golf squads will have two-day tournaments in Daytona Beach, starting on Tuesday, February 28. The men will tee off against Bethune-Cookman University at Legends Country Club, while the women will take part in the Gary Freeman BCU Invitational, at the LPGA International.
The softball Owls will fly to Las Vegas, Nevada, to compete in the Eller Media Stadium Classic on the campus of UNLV. They will have five games over the three-day weekend, beginning Friday, March 2, at noon against the University of Illinois.
Both FAU tennis teams will be at home on Saturday, March 3, in simultaneous action at Patch Reef Park at 2 pm. The women host Middle Tennessee State University, while the men will battle Belmont University.
