Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team's winning streak stretched to six matches with a 5-1 home victory over Georgia Southern University on Saturday at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. The Owls improved to 6-1 on the season.
FAU showcased its depth and experience in singles by winning on five of the six courts. Junior Marlene Ryan dropped only two games in cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 match, and freshman Catalina Ene scored a decisive 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 6 position.
Other victorious Owls included junior Natasha Basma, who won a third-set tiebreaker 10-8 at No. 2 singles; senior Cassie Bergeson, with a three-set triumph in the No. 4 match; and senior Erika Mrazkova, who was a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (8) winner at No. 5 singles.
"This was a good team victory. We have showcased a lot of improvement over the years," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach. "Georgia Southern was a team that beat us recently (5-2 in 2010). Now, we have a balanced and talented team."
The visiting Eagles' lone point came with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles.
FAU returns to the court on Saturday, March 3, at 2 p.m. when it faces Sun Belt Conference opponent Middle Tennessee State University from Patch Reef Park, 2000 West Yamato Road in Boca Raton.
