Daytona Beach, FL - Having three double-figure scorers wasn't enough as the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, a 71-61 setback at Bethune-Cookman University's Moore Gymnasium on Friday.
The Owls, 1-1, will have their home opener on Sunday, November 18, at 2 p.m. at the FAU Arena against in-state rival Jacksonville University. The host Wildcats improve to 2-1 on the season.
Junior guard Latavia Dempsey paced the FAU offensive attack with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior forward Chenise Miller and junior guard Takia Brooks also scored 13 points.
Bethune-Cookman made 47 percent of its shots and was led by 14 points from starter Amanda Hairston and reserve Terrenisha Hollis.
FAU trimmed a 45-36 second-half deficit to one point, 52-51, following a three-point field goal by Dempsey with 5:56 remaining in the game. However, the host Wildcats responded and built up a seven point advantage with 4:17 remaining following a jump shot by Hollis.
The Owls threatened again, closing the gap to three points, 58-55, with 3:11 left after Brooks nailed two free throws. But Bethune-Cookman once again pulled away for the victory.
