Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team accomplished one of its goals by qualifying for the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Championships. The Owls are preparing to play top-seeded University of North Texas in a first-round match on Wednesday, October 31 at 11 a.m. at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL.
FAU played the Mean Green tough during the regular season, suffering a 2-1 setback on Friday, October 5 in Denton, Texas. Freshman Claire Emslie scored the team's goal midway through the second half to square the match. North Texas scored the game-winning goal with 12 minutes remaining.
The Owls had a 3-7 record in SBC matches and enter the tournament with a 5-12 overall record. The team is coming off a 2-1 home loss to South Florida rival FIU on Thursday, October 25.
FAU is led by Emslie's 10 goals and 22 points on the season. Freshman forward Natalia Hernandez and junior midfielder Ellie Smith have both scored three goals.
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes has made 96 saves this season, posted two shutouts and was named the SBC's Defensive Player of the Week once.
North Texas finished in a three-way tie for first place with an 8-1-1 conference record. Overall, the team brings in a 13-4-2 record. The Mean Green is led by Michelle Young's 10 goals, while Karla Pineda and Kelsey Hodges each added seven goals.
