Florida Atlantic University has named Greg Gantt and April Goins, two of the university's basketball players, as the first "Student-Athletes of the Week" for 2012.
Gantt helped the Owls to back-to-back wins for the first time since November. On January 19, the junior guard scored a season-high 25 points in FAU's 88-67 win over Troy. He then scored 19 points in the Owls' 66-64 win over FIU on January 21, including the game-winning free throws with 00.6 seconds left on the clock. The win put FAU over .500 in conference play for the first time this season.
Goins helped lead a balanced scoring attack with two double-figure performances in FAU's two road conference victories last week. Her efforts have helped the Owls to a 5-2 start in Sun Belt Conference play. The senior forward scored 10 points to pace the Owls in a win over FIU on January 21. That game followed a 10-point outing in a road victory over Troy on January 19. The Detroit, Michigan native grabbed five rebounds in both games and shot 53 percent from the floor (9-of-17) in the two games.
The women's basketball team is back in action at the FAU Arena tonight when they host Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. The men host Western Kentucky tomorrow at 7 p.m.
This Saturday, the women's tennis team hosts Broward College at 9:30 a.m. and Bethune-Cookman at 2 p.m. The men's tennis team is also at Patch Reef Park at 2 p.m., also against Bethune-Cookman. The men's and women's swimming and diving squads are on the road at Fort Pierce that day, taking on Indian River Community College.
