Singles Rally Lifts Women's Tennis Past Jacksonville

Jacksonville, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team evened its spring record with a dramatic 4-3 triumph over in-state rival Jacksonville University on Saturday in Jacksonville.

The Owls, 1-1, rallied after dropping the doubles point by quickly winning four singles matches at the bottom of the lineup.

"This was a hard-fought match with the girls battling hard after dropping the doubles points," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach. "It feels good to a win over an in-state team. Everybody fought hard in singles."

Junior Natasha Basma won convincingly 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles before fellow junior Marlene Ryan picked up her first singles win of the season with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph in the No. 4 match.

Senior Erika Mrazkova improved to 2-0 in dual matches by dropping just three games 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Freshman Natalia Tomaszewicz picked up her first career victory 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to round out the winners.

Basma would team with senior Justine Humair to pick up FAU's only doubles victory 8-5 at the No. 2 position.

Humair would lose a hard-fought singles match to anchor the lineup, dropping the third-set tiebreaker in a marathon 22-20 at No. 1 singles. Fellow senior Cassie Bergeson also battled in a three-set setback at No. 2 singles. She forced the third frame by winning a second set tiebreaker. However, she fell 10-5 in the third-set tiebreaker.

FAU returns to the court to battle Savannah State University on Sunday, January 22, in Jacksonville, starting at 10 a.m.
