Boca Raton, Fla. - The sixth-seeded Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team is preparing to face the University of South Alabama in Thursday's first-round match in the Sun Belt Conference Championships this week in Mobile, Ala. The Owls come into the tournament with a 13-11 regular-season record, their first winning season since 2004, after winning 11 of their final 13 matches.
South Alabama is the No. 11 seed in the tournament, which is scheduled to continue through Sunday. FAU defeated the Jaguars 6-0 earlier this season.
"Everyone is confident and healthy heading into the conference tournament," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach. "We were able to play some matches towards the end of the season to prepare us for a conference tournament setting. The girls are looking forward to the challenge."
FAU earned dual match victories over conference opponents the University of South Alabama and Troy University during the season.
Sophomore Marlene Ryan leads the team with a 19-10 record, featuring a 14-6 mark in No. 2 singles matches. She has teamed with junior Justine Humair to post a 9-3 record in doubles matches.
Humair went 13-13 in singles play during the regular season, but won 12 matches at the top of the team's lineup. Senior Virginia Augustin has won a career-high 13 singles matches, while sophomore Natasha Phillips posted a 13-6 record. Rounding out the team's top performers this spring have been juniors Cassie Bergeson, Erika Mrazkova and sophomore Natasha Basma.
