HOT SPRINGS, AR - A huge second half rally catapulted North Texas past Florida Atlantic in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference on Sunday.
FAU (21-10) got out of the blocks early and never trailed in the first half. A Raymond Taylor three put the Owls up 11 with 1:36 left in the first half, but North Texas scored the last four points of the stanza and trailed 34-27 at the break.
The score was tied at 54 when the Mean Green (21-10) scored 13 of the next 16 points to take a 67-57 lead with 4:24 remaining in the game. FAU managed to pull within seven, but back to back Owl turnovers foiled any hopes of a comeback. Taylor led FAU with 13 points, Greg Gantt (10), Brett Royster (10) and Dennis Mavin (10) joined him in double figures.
As a result of having won the Sun Belt regular season championship, the Owls are guaranteed an appearance in the postseason NIT. The bracket, including FAU's opponent, date and time of the game will be released on Sunday, March 13.
