BOCA RATON, FL- Led by junior Justin Thompson, the Owls shot consistent scores in the 70s all three rounds to give them a top ten finish at the Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando, FL. After playing three rounds in two days, FAU shot a team total of 891 (298, 294, 299).
Host, University of Central Florida took first place by shooting a 23 under par composite score of 841. The Knights held the lead in each of the three rounds with scores of 275, 282 and 284. T
he spot for individual first place honors was won on the first playoff hole by Daniel Mazziotta of Florida Gulf Coast (65, 69, 70). Mazziotta beat out Robert Karlsson (69, 70, 65) of Liberty University after being tied after the three rounds, both had a total score of 204.
Thompson played strongly for FAU on Monday and Tuesday to lead the Owls. With a total score of 219, Thompson ended tied for 26th place with Troy Spencer from Seton Hall University. The West Palm Beach native, finished three strokes above par with rounds of 73, 70 and 76.
All within a few strokes of each other the rest of the FAU men's tennis team finished strong, all shooting rounds below 80. Clinton Wilhelm closed out the three rounds with a combine score of 222 (77, 74, 71), Kelly McHugh finished 10 above par (74, 77, 75 -226) and Michael Baskovich followed a stroke behind with a 227 (76, 74, 77). Freshman Casey Matthews rounded out the scoring for the team shooting a 229 (75, 76, 78).
The Owls will have a ten day break until hosting the Spring Break Championship at the Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, FL. The tournament will be a two day event on March 25 and 26.
