Boca Raton, Fla. - Winning the top four singles positions paved the way for the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team's 4-3 victory over the University of Massachusetts on Monday afternoon at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. The win is the fifth straight for the Owls and improves the team's record to 7-9 on the season.

"We were victorious at the top of the singles lineup and used strong first-set efforts to jump out to a big lead early in our matches," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach. "I was proud of our players' efforts throughout the match."

Winning singles matches were junior Justine Humair, with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 position; Sophomore Marlene Ryan, a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 2; Sophomore Natasha Basma, victorious 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3; and junior Cassie Bergeson, with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at the No. 4 position.

Ryan also teamed with Humair to win the No. 2 doubles match for the Owls' only doubles victory on the afternoon.

"Marlene played outstanding tennis today against a quality (singles) opponent," noted Hora-Cava. "She clinched the victory after battling back in the second set (winning the last six games of the second set). Marlene has a good court sense, and that helps in both doubles and singles."

Humair recorded her seventh singles victory of the season.

FAU returns to the park on Wednesday, March 16, to host the University of Wyoming, starting at 9 a.m.
