Denver, Co. - The University of Denver made 63 percent of its first half shots to cruise to a commanding 79-55 victory over Florida Atlantic University in a Sun Belt Conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night in Denver. The Owls drop to a 6-17 record on the season and 3-9 in league action.
FAU returns to Boca Raton on Saturday, February 12, when it battles the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, starting at 3 p.m., from the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus. The game will be the basketball program's annual "Pink Zone" Game, with proceeds supporting breast cancer awareness.
Denver broke a close game by outscoring the Owls by a 23-9 margin in the final 9:23 of the first half to enjoy a 42-24 halftime edge. The host Pioneers five of their six three-point field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes.
Senior guard Lyrell Barfield continues to provide a spark off the FAU bench, scoring a team-high 18 points. The Miami native paced three double-figure scores and connected on two three-point field goals.
Kimberly Smith added 14 points for her most points in a Sun Belt Conference game, after having just 10 points in her last five games. The freshman guard from Minneola, Fla., connected on four three-point field goals.
Meanwhile, junior forward Vontrice Dennis rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points. She also had seven rebounds.
Britteni Rice led the Pioneers' scoring attack with 18 points. That performance was highlighted by a perfect 4-for-4 shooting performance from behind the three-point field goal arc.
Denver, which improved to 14-10 overall and 6-5 in league play, shot 57 percent from the floor in the contest and held a 41-35 rebounding edge.
