Daytona Beach, Fla. - Sweeping all nine matches, the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team recorded its first win of the spring season with a dual match victory over Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls improve to 1-2 on the season and will look to get to the .500 mark on Sunday, February 6 against in-state foe Stetson University in DeLand, Fla. "Today was a good match in getting our first win of the season, while also helping us prepare for Sunday's match at Stetson," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach.
Leading 1-0 after earning the lone doubles point FAU continued the momentum by not dropping a set in winning the six singles matches.
Freshman Marlene Ryan secured the team victory with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles. Ryan was also a winner in doubles with junior Cassie Bergeson, 8-3, in the No. 2 position.
Junior Justine Humair earned a straight-set win at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-4 over Katarina Szaboova of Bethune-Cookman. Rounding out the winners were sophomore Natasha Basma 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 position; junior Erika Mrazkova 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles; Bergeson won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles; and senior Virginia Augustin picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 position.
In doubles, the duo of Humair and Basma won by an 8-3 decision to anchor the lineup. Also, Mrazkova teamed with sophomore Natasha Phillips at No. 3 doubles to win 8-4.
FAU will have its home opener on Saturday, February 12, against Florida Gulf Coast University from Patch Reef Park, 1200 Yamato Road in Boca Raton.
