Boca Raton, Fla. - Victories by Marlene Ryan in singles and doubles action highlighted the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team's performance in a 5-2 setback to Sun Belt Conference opponent Arkansas State University on Sunday at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton.

Ryan, a sophomore from Delray Beach, had a strong weekend, compiling a 3-1 record and winning both singles matches. She posted a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles on Sunday over the Red Wolves' Janie Nowland. Ryan also had a 6-1, 6-1 triumph on Saturday against an opponent from Florida Gulf Coast University.

In doubles, Ryan combined with junior Cassie Bergeson for an 8-4 win in the No. 3 match against Arkansas State.

"I had a good mindset during the match," said Ryan about Sunday's singles performance. "My serve helped build confidence in both areas of my play, and I was able to find some of my opponent's weaknesses. It was a good match."

FAU's other win came from sophomore Natasha Phillips at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over ASU's Ceara Howey. The Boca Raton native has now posted four singles victories this season.

"I tried to focus more on the shots instead of the match score," said Phillips. "I was able to stay calm and play my game."

Natasha Basma dropped a hard fought straight-set match at No. 3 singles. After losing the opening set 6-1 the sophomore from Boca Raton fell 7-4 in a tiebreaker to decide the second set and match.

FAU falls to 1-5 on the season and will return to the court on Saturday, February 19, in a home match against Florida A&M University at Patch Reef Park.
