SEATTLE, WA - Greg Gantt scored a game high 23 points, but the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team opened its 2011-12 campaign with a 70-65 loss to Portland on Saturday.
The Owls (0-1) got out quickly, building a 12 point lead less than 10 minutes into the game. Portland (1-0) battled back and tied the game at 35 on a Ryan Nicholas jumper just as the first half buzzer sounded.
The Pilots were able to cling to slim lead for most the second half, but FAU tied the score at 58 with less than four and a half minutes left in the game. The score was tied at 63 with 2:04 remaining when Kore White tipped in a missed Dennis Mavin free throw to give the Owls a two-point lead. However, those would be the final points of the game for FAU. Portland scored the last seven points of the game to secure the win.
Pablo Bertone scored a career-high 11 points for the Owls. FAU will continue action in the World Vision Classic on Sunday when they face the host Washington Huskies. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. eastern and live stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
