Women's Swimming and Diving Drops Home Opener to FGCU

Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's swimming and diving won eight events and tallied 18 top-five efforts but lost a dual meet to in-state rival Florida Gulf Coast University 179-119 on Saturday at the FAU Aquatic Center in Boca Raton. The team also competed against Princeton University in a scrimmage session.
Junior Eszter Bucz paced the Owls' personal efforts with three event victories. She took the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.36) after touching the wall to win the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.41). Bucz also won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:28.10. The Hungary native rounded out her busy day by swimming a leg on the second-place 200-yard medley relay team.
Senior Jonna Nyback also had a strong day, winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.39) by two-hundredth of a second margin over Princeton's Lisa Boyce. Nyback tallied a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.86) and had a fourth-place effort in the 100-yard freestyle (54.21). She also swam the anchor leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Freshman Iwona Lefanowicz earned a five-second victory in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.54), while fellow freshman Anett Kovacs took top honors in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.50) with a four-second victory. Lefanowicz also had a runner-up showing in the 100-yard backstroke (56.79).
Junior Kristen LeGro had a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (25.32), and senior Elizabeth Starke recorded a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.19) to round out the team's strong performances in the season-opening home meet. In diving, freshman Courtney Hansen won both the 1- and 3-meter events. She scored 247.12 points on the lower board while tallying 239.17 points on the 3-meter board.
The Owls return to the pool on Saturday, November 5, in a triangular meet against FIU and Florida Southern in Miami.
