Boca Raton, FL - Returning starting pitchers for the Florida Atlantic University baseball team got their first work of the preseason during Saturday's intra squad scrimmage at the FAU Baseball Stadium, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus. The team continues to prepare for the season opener on February 18 against Hofstra University.
Junior right-hander Ryan Garton and sophomore right-hander R.J. Alvarez each took to the mound to start for their respective teams during a four-inning contest.
"It was a clean intra squad and I thought we played and pitched well," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach.
Each starter tossed two innings with sophomore left-hander Jason Boyer and sophomore right-hander Mike Ruccio coming in relief and finishing the scrimmage.
Prior to the scrimmage the team worked on relays and cutoff from outfield throws while discussing communication on fly balls.
The Owls continue preseason workouts on Sunday, starting at 10:30 a.m.
"Sundays are a very important day in college baseball," said McCormack. "We need to make sure we match our enthusiasm that we had the past two days."
Florida Atlantic is coming off a Sun Belt Conference championship and appearance in the 2010 NCAA Gainesville Regional.
