Boca Raton, FL - Seniors Marc Abdelnour, Ervin Garibovic and Daniel Vardag have been selected to serve as team captains for the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team for the upcoming spring season. The selection was announced by Head Coach Brandon Stokes.
"We have three outstanding young men to create, mold and define our spring journey," noted Stokes, entering his third season at the Owls' helm.
Abdelnour was ranked No. 16 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast region preseason poll, after compiling a 9-3 record last fall and winning the University of Central Florida Fall Invitational singles championship. The Syria native will become FAU's all-time career singles win leader with his next victory. He currently has 71 career victories, and also ranks among the college's all-time leaders in doubles victories, total (singles and doubles) triumphs and winning percentage.
"Marc's odyssey to becoming a captain hinged on his introspective search after last season," said Stokes. "He accepted the responsibility of his athletic gifts and has fully entered this spring's quest to become an exceptional competitive warrior."
Garibovic, in his second season with the program, has posted 10 singles and 14 doubles victories during his collegiate career. He advanced to the second round of last fall's ITA Southeast regional tournament.
"Ervin's transformation as a more complete competitor is a manifestation of his commitment and belief in himself and our program," said Stokes. "He is determined to help us reach our goals and fulfill his mission for coming to FAU."
Vardag, who has returned for his fifth year, also has put his mark on the program in singles and doubles. The Boca Raton native has posted 42 singles wins, including 17 during the 2008-09 season, and 40 doubles triumphs during his collegiate career.
"Dan has persevered through a serious and nagging injury," said Stokes. "He gained invaluable perspective while watching his teammates in competition. His competitive fire and perspective have added a depth to this year's team."
The three seniors form a strong nucleus, with other key players, that will challenge opponents from the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten and Big 12 conferences, along with the Ivy League. The Owls will also be a top contender in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
"We are growing this program, taking small strides toward making our vision a reality," Stokes said.
FAU opens the spring season on Thursday, January 20, when it faces the University of Miami in Coral Gables. The first home match is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 12 against the University of North Florida, at Patch Reef Park, 2000 Yamato Road, in Boca Raton.
