Boca Raton, FL - Two student-athletes continue to reign supreme for Florida Atlantic University's sports teams this winter: men's basketball player Raymond Taylor and women's swimmer Eszter Bucz. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that both were selected as the college's Student-Athlete of the Week following another solid week of performances.
Taylor helped the Owls post a pair of road conference victories to keep their perfect Sun Belt Conference record intact at 6-0. Including two non-conference victories, the team has a six-game winning streak at the mid-way point of the season. This is the longest winning streak for FAU men's basketball at the NCAA Division I level.
The 5-foot-7 sophomore guard from Miami averaged 21.5 points in FAU's victories at Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky last week, and made a key layup that helped seal the team's victory against the Hilltoppers last Saturday. In the two games, Taylor made 54.2 percent of his field goals (13-of-24), 54.9 percent of his 3-point field goals (7-of-13) and 76.9 percent of his free throws (10-of-13, including a perfect 7-for-7 at Middle Tennessee). He also was on the court for 77 of a possible 80 minutes in the two games.
On the season, Taylor ranks second on the team in scoring average (11.5 points per game) and assists (78), while ranking first in steals (21) and minutes per game played (30.6).
Meanwhile, Bucz had another strong performance in the pool for the Owls, posting four top-three finishes against some of the nation's top swimmers from defending NCAA national champion University of Florida. The Hungary native runner-up showings in the 400-yard individual medley (4:25.45) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.87), while placing third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.61). She also swam a leg of FAU's third-place 200-yard medley relay team.
As for the week ahead in FAU sports, the men's basketball team will receive national media attention on Saturday, January 22, when it hosts UALR on ESPN2, starting at 1 p.m. Fans are being asked to wear FAU athletics sportswear or blue clothing for "Blue Out" Day at the FAU Arena, located at 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus. Fans are also asked to remain to support the women's basketball team as it plays the Trojans, starting at approximately 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, the women's swimming and diving team will continue its challenging schedule by traveling to the University of Miami on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m., in Coral Gables.
The men's and women's tennis teams begin their seasons this week. The men's team travels to Miami this Thursday at 6 p.m. before playing taking on three teams over the weekend in Tallahassee. FAU will face Furman and Florida State on Saturday, and battle Nebraska on Sunday. The women's tennis team will play at nationally ranked Miami on Friday, starting at noon.
