Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team will search for its first victory of the season this weekend with matches against North Dakota State University and West Virginia University in the Hurricane Cup at University of Miami in Coral Gables. The Owls will face North Dakota State on Friday, September 10 at 5 p.m. before facing West Virginia on Sunday, September 12 at 11:30 a.m.
FAU, 0-4 on the season, continues to experience growing pains, with 13 freshmen and three red-shirt freshmen on the roster. The team has lost three of its four matches by one-goal margins - the latest coming last weekend when the Owls opened the home season with a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris University and a 3-2 setback to Fresno State University.
Four of the team's five goals this season have been scored in the second half of matches. Freshman defender Allyson Buerosse and freshman forward Brittney Nash are tied for team-high honors with two goals. Both players found the back of the net during the Fresno State match. Buerosse has scored two goals on three shots this season.
North Dakota State stands 2-0-2 on the season and is coming off draw decisions against Creighton University, 2-2 on Tuesday, and Iowa State University, a scoreless match on Sunday. The Bison have picked up victories against University of North Dakota and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Individually, Holly Christian and Quin Ryan each have scored two goals this season. Ryan has added an assist and leads the team with 18 shots.
West Virginia began the season ranked No. 24 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, has made 10 straight NCAA tournament appearances and has won its Big East Conference division in three of the last four years. The Mountaineers will bring a 2-2 record into the tournament after a 2-1 victory over Central Michigan University last Saturday. Leading the team is Bri Rodriguez, who has scored a team-best two goals and tallied four points. Ashtin Larkin has recorded two assists and goalkeeper Kerri Butler has posted a shutout and 1.46 goals against average this season.
