Boca Raton, Fla. - Soccer forwards Allison Griffin and Benny Barshai have been named Florida Atlantic University's Student-Athletes of the Week after helping the Owls pick up important home victories last week.
Griffin, a sophomore from Palm Bay, Fla., had a banner day in her first career collegiate start, scoring two goals and contributing two assists in FAU's 6-0 victory on Sunday against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. Her six points in the game were the most recorded by an Florida Atlantic player in a match since 2006, when Tessa McGarrity tallied seven points against Troy. Griffin also provided a spark off the bench with two shots in last Friday's 1-0 victory over Arkansas State. Her offense has helped the Owls to a 2-0 start in the Sun Belt Conference. The 2-0 start is the first time since joining the SBC.
Meanwhile, Barshai scored his first-career goal in last Wednesday's 2-1 home win against North Florida. The goal gave FAU a 1-0 advantage. The freshman from Parkland also recorded the only shot on goal during the team's 2-0 loss at Stetson, last Saturday.
Other Owls' student-athletes nominated for the athletic department's weekly award were volleyball player Christina Wallinger and golfer Michael Baskovich.
FAU teams will be in road action this week. The football team battles in-state rival USF at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 2 in Tampa. The volleyball team hosts Stetson on Tuesday, September 28 before continuing Sun Belt Conference action this weekend at Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee.
Also, the men's soccer team begins its Mid-American Conference schedule at Akron on Friday, October 1. The women's soccer team hopes to continue its strong league play at South Alabama on Friday before facing Troy on Sunday, October 3. Finally, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams get their seasons underway on Friday at the All Florida Invitational in Gainesville.
